Better Nailsea Lockdown Litter Pick Ideas

Better Nailsea is a local volunteer group that was set up in 2016 to maintain and enhance Nailsea. The group holds litter picks twice a month to help clear rubbish from around the town, however, due to coronavirus, recent litter picks have not gone ahead.

Instead, Better Nailsea have come up with ways local residents can volunteer and help reduce litter around Nailsea.

Here are some volunteering ideas for various Nailsea residents (in line with restrictions) from Better Nailsea:

For Avid Walkers…

Those of you who are avid walkers will appreciate the stunning views in our local area. Please consider tucking a carrier bag into your pocket so when you see the plastic bottles, empty cans or takeaway boxes exposed in the hedges or against a fence you can collect them. You will be helping the wildlife and protecting the environment.

For Home Schoolers…

School-age children may now be learning from home. Little ones need to get out and about and they love being involved – can you take a different path each day and play a game of Find the Rubbish? At the end of the week ‘show and tell’ with before and after photos? Please email photos to Better Nailsea (betternailsea@gmail.com) or post directly on our Facebook page (@BetterNailseaGroup). Better yet – share with school and nursery groups to inspire others.

For Neighbours…

Many of us have become more connected to our neighbours – perhaps you have a street WhatsApp group? Could you be the first person on your patch who shares photos of where you litter picked locally? Your neighbours who cannot go out would love to see what you have done! You can let your friends know what you are doing and ask them to do the same. Tucking a bag in your pocket is the only prep work!

For Home Workers…

Home workers can be a virtual inspiration. Does your team need a change from the weekly Teams quiz? There is a free teambuilding challenge (just tie a carrier bag around your dog lead or wrap around your keys) that gets everyone out in the fresh air and away from their screen and shows your company that you care about your community. Whoever takes the most steps or collects the most rubbish could win the title of Volunteer of the Week award. You could post the winner on your company newsletter or social media and inspire other teams.

For Anyone…

There are more volunteering possibilities! Would like to help Better Nailsea? If you are not interested in litter picking, perhaps you could help with our administration or greeting volunteers at our litter picks? We hope to set dates for group litter picking as soon as it is safe to do so.
