Jo Shepherd’s photography examines Bristol Airport’s rural location and its effect on the surrounding landscape. It links the demand for air travel to the carbon and non-carbon emissions of flights and considers how the residents of North Somerset both enjoy and endure their neighbourhood airport. They take advantage of its proximity for holidays, but also experience the airport’s presence bleeding into their countryside.
Bristol Airport’s 2018 consultation document anticipated a demand of 20 million passengers per annum by 2050. The same year that the last government declared that flying would be ‘Jet Zero’ [carbon neutral]. Is it really possible to achieve both ambitions?
Thresholds was briefly exhibited in April 2024 and described by visitors as “thought-provoking” and “powerful”.
