Carers Week 7th – 13th June 2021

Carers Week 2021 is taking place from Monday 7th June to Sunday 13th June. The annual campaign raises awareness of caring, and the challenges unpaid carers can face. Also, Carers Week helps people to recognise the contribution carers make to families, communities and people across the UK.

What is Carers Week?

The purpose of Carers Week is to raise awareness. There are over 6.5 million carers in the UK. Carers play a critical role in families and communities, and this week is a chance to highlight the challenges they may face as well as show appreciation. Carers Week may also help those with caring responsibilities to recognise their own role and gain access to support they need.

The annual campaign takes place during the second week of June each year. The focus of the 2021 week is to ‘Make Caring Visible and Valuable’. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the new challenges it presents, carers have had to continually adapt and even take on more responsibility for the care of family members, neighbours, or others who need support.

Who is a Carer?

According to the Carers Week website:

“A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition, or who needs extra help as they grow older. It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support.”
