Back to School Tips for Parents

Get Organised

Organisation is key! Now you know this year’s term dates, it’s time to put them in the calendar and make sure everyone in the household knows what’s happening when. If you think it might be helpful, a calendar in your child’s room can be a good idea too.

Bedtime Routines

Creating a routine and sticking to it is important, making sure your children feel well rested, prepared, and organised. Setting these routines early is key, allowing everyone – including you! – time to get used to them in advance of the start of term.

Back to School Shopping

Returning to school means back to school shopping! As with most of these tips, it’s a good idea to sort this early. Otherwise, something might get forgotten, and no one wants to start the school year feeling unprepared! Don’t forget: stationary, lunchboxes, uniform, sports kit, and water bottles.

Homework Space

Do you have a dedicated homework space? If not, it might be worth setting one up. Doing so will provide children with the space and quiet they need to concentrate on their work, and encourage good habits early on in the school year.

Back to School Packed Lunch Ideas

We are what we eat, so make sure you plan healthy lunchboxes to power your children’s curiosity. Taking some time now to plan ideas and figure out what your children might like is a great way to make sure they have the fuel they need to thrive!

Ideally, a packed lunch should contain all of the major food groups, plenty of fruit and veg, and low fat and refined carbohydrates.

Here are some healthy suggestions:

  • Wholemeal pitta with roast vegetables and hummus.
  • Carrot sticks and hummus.
  • Wholemeal pesto pasta or tomato salad.
  • Cherry tomatoes.
  • Low fat, low sugar yoghurt.
  • Tuna salad sandwich.
  • Fresh fruit like grapes, bananas, and apples.
  • Plenty of healthy snacks like nuts, dried fruit, and cereal bars.
  • A little healthy treat – we all need a pick-me-up!
